Starting on 8 November 2024 “Nagoya Halal Food Art Project” with Prach Pimarnman (Thailand)
Deep South Thailand, consisting of the three southern border provinces of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, where 80% of the population is Muslim, stands in contrast to the rest of Thailand, where 90% of the population is Buddhist. Despite a history of oppression as a minority during Thailand’s modernization as a nation-state, this region, rich in nature and with a coexistence of Malay and Thai cultures, has been home to many active artists who have recently attracted attention in the Thai art scene.
Prach Pimarnman, an artist based in Deep South Thailand, will be conducting research and creating works in Nagoya for one month from November 8th. The theme is halal food. Many people may have heard of halal food but may not know much about it.
Nagoya is home to many foreign residents, and there are numerous restaurants that serve halal food. This project, supported by Creative Link Nagoya, is an art project that attempts to fuse art and inbound tourism. With the recovery of inbound demand after the COVID-19 pandemic lagging behind in Nagoya, this project focuses on food culture, a mainstay of Nagoya’s tourism resources, and conducts research from an artistic perspective, presenting the results as works of art.
In addition to creating and exhibiting works, we will also hold events that contribute to cross-cultural understanding during the research process. There will be events where you can actually enjoy the food and drink, so please stay tuned!
